Facebook users have access to a wide variety of services and utilities. One of the readily available options is Facebook Chat. Chat on its own can be exciting, but it can be enhanced with a variety of emoticon codes that create simple graphical representations with the text based codes within the chat window.
The official Facebook chat emoticons range from smile faces to sharks.

These are currently the only officially supported Facebook emoticons available for chat. There are several plug-ins and third party software options that can provide an extended emoticon library. Although the extended emoticons are diverse through third party plugins, they may contain spyware or other malware that can be dangerous for computer systems. The third party plug-ins allow users to see the emoticons that they add into the chat, but will force the message recipient to have to install the extra and potentially harmful software to their computer. The extended emoticons do not function through mobile devices and other Facebook chat enabled services.
