10. The Internet of Things is Exploding
The so called “Internet of Things” refers to networking of devices that aren’t just computers, tablets, and phones, but all kinds of “things” we have around us. This could be our home appliances like the fridge, stove, and lamps, or it could be simple objects like books, clothes, food, and so on.
The idea behind The Internet of Things is to connect all these things to the internet, and that’s exactly what has been happening thanks to the explosion in the number of devices that are now internet connected. We’ve recently published an article about smart home devices, and devices you can read about there are a good example.
According to Cisco the number of internet connected devices right now is about 13 billion. That’s basically 4.3 devices per every internet user on average. By 2020 they predict this number to grow all the way to 50 billion, which is pretty amazing.
In other words we are seeing the emergence of The Internet of Everything, as they call it, connecting more and more of everything around us and making our world more and more deeply connected. The internet will pretty much be everywhere and in everything.
